Mount Shuksan from Sunrise Lake, circa 1928
With the exception of Mount Rainier from Paradise Lodge, no mountain view in Washington has generated quite as much admiration as that of Mount Shuksan. Usually, it is reflected in Picture Lake or captured here, at nearby smaller Sunrise Lake. On the far shore in the historical photo is Mount Baker Lodge. Built in 1927 by Bert Huntoon, who also served as manger, the lodge entertained guests until it was destroyed b fire in 1931. On a spring afternoon during those few years, Huntoon photographed these exposed "polar bears" artfully testing the lake.
In the wintry repeat photograph by Grant Gunderson, everyone is standing on Sunrise Lake. Amy Howat, in profile on the left; her mother, Gail Howat; and Gail's sister, Bunny Finch, (both standing in cross-country skis and looking at Gunderson) are members of family at has managed the ski facilities for the M. Baker Recreation Company for e last 36 years. And JoJo the border collie (in profile) has been taking it all in since 1996. –PD
